FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
- What is 10DLC and why does it matter?
- 10DLC means a ten-digit local phone number registered for application-based texting. Complete your campaign registration in Vottiv. Political committee verification and carrier approval are required before you can send. Vottiv manages the submission process; approval is not immediate.
- How is this different from mass/broadcast texting?
- Vottiv supports peer-to-peer texting, where staff or volunteers send messages and handle replies. It also offers managed sends. Both use your campaign number and keep conversations with your voter records.
- What happens when someone texts STOP?
- We immediately stop sending to that number and add them to your opt-out list. This happens automatically and is permanent. It's required by law and protects your campaign.
- Can I send MMS (picture messages)?
- Yes! You can attach images to your messages. MMS messages are great for event flyers, candidate photos, or voting location maps. They cost slightly more than SMS. For video, use HD Video Texting — it accepts videos far larger than carriers allow in a normal MMS.
- Can I send HD or HD video by text?
- Yes. With HD Video Texting you upload one HD or HD video up to 60 seconds, and Vottiv handles the rest. Every voter receives the complete video right in the message thread, plus their own link that streams at up to HD when their device and connection support it. Per-voter reporting shows who watched, how far they got, and who tapped your call-to-action — and you can retarget any of those audiences with one click.
- How much does SMS texting cost?
- Published local-number SMS rates are 3.5¢ per segment with a Voter Contact Package and 4.5¢ at standard rates. MMS is 6¢ and 7¢ per message. A long text can use multiple segments. Plan and registration costs are separate from message usage. HD Video Texting costs the MMS rate plus a small per-message video surcharge, shown in the composer before you send. - Do I need to buy a separate phone number?
- No. Your organization's texting number is included. Complete your registration and wait for carrier approval and number assignment before sending.
- Can volunteers text from their own phones?
- Volunteers text through the Vottiv web platform, not their personal phones. This protects volunteer privacy and gives you full conversation history and analytics.
- How do I import my contact list?
- Vottiv provides voter data through Data Center. Create a voter group there, then use it in your texting program once registration is approved and your campaign number is assigned.
